Milton Keynes has a huge variety of housing stock, from modern executive houses to Victorian villas and period cottages. This stock is being added to by around 1,200 new homes every year. These range from one-bedroom starter homes to five-bedroom detached properties.
Potential residents can choose to live in the carefully planned new villages – some of which are designed around lakes, or woods, or incorporate large areas of greenery. Or if they prefer, they can look for their ideal home in towns within the city, such as Stony Stratford and Wolverton, or in villages like Loughton and Milton Keynes village.
Or if they still can’t find something they like, they can join the 3,000 individuals who, since 1970, have bought plots for self-building.
Raising tomorrows workforce
Milton Keynes has one of the largest new schools’ building programmes in the UK, with an average of 1.5 new schools built in the city each year. These are staffed by teachers who are happy to be working here: in 2005, 98% of newly qualified teachers stayed in the city.
At all levels and ages, there’s a strong educational infrastructure. There are 86 primary schools of all types and sizes, from urban to rural. There are 15 secondary schools – a very high proportion of which have beacon or specialist college status. The Local Education Authority is also working in close partnership with schools to raise standards even further.
At either end of the educational age range, Milton Keynes also has plenty to offer.
Pre-school children are well provided for, via nursery education within primary schools, and in private and voluntary nurseries. Milton Keynes College lies within the city, the University of Buckingham and the Open University are both nearby, and Cranfield College is only seven miles away.
There’s already a huge variety of housing, and around 1,200 new homes being built every year. There’s also a strong educational infrastructure to support them – with one of the UK’s largest new schools’ building programmes, and 86 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, and 3 universities nearby.
Healthcare
Each city grid square has a doctor’s and dentist’s surgery, and the city has its own Three Star Trust hospital.
